Sustainability
Good starts from the ground up.
At Warrior, we invest in our employees and the communities where we operate, conduct business ethically, and adhere to best practices in corporate governance. We are a large-scale, low-cost producer and exporter of premium quality metallurgical coal, also known as hard-coking coal (HCC), operating highly efficient longwall operations in underground mines in Alabama. Our belief is that long-term success requires a commitment to mine safety and environmental stewardship.
Quick Facts
69%
of the methane from our mines’ emissions were captured in 2022 for beneficial use
25%
reduction of water usage by 2030
99%
compliance with EPA’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program for the reporting period ending in Q3 2023
19%
reduction of reclamation requirements by more than 1,300 acres over the previous 5-year period
2023
Warrior earned the “Water Quality Stewardship Award” for the use of advanced systems to maximize the capture of ultra fine coal, which minimizes the amount of waste materials
Greenhouse Gas Emission (GHG)
At Warrior, we continually find innovative ways to capture and/or destroy methane emissions, which are a naturally occurring byproduct of metallurgical coal mining. Through the process of venting and capturing methane, not only do we protect the environment and reduce our carbon footprint, but we also provide the safest possible environment for our workers underground. We also destroy methane and convert it to a GHG that has a lower global warming potential.
We take every opportunity to optimize our operational plans to reduce GHG emissions. Through the development of the Blue Creek Mine and the Mine 4 North reserves, we plan on encountering less methane in the remaining reserves to ensure that we achieve and sustain our emission reduction goals, we prioritize the development of the resources that are essential to meeting our customers’ needs.

Water and Waste Management
Water is one of our most precious natural resources and a critical resource for our mining process. We are committed to responsible practices and continue to focus on reducing our reliance on local water systems. We also understand that good stewardship of our water resources is critical to our communities, ecosystems, and our mining process.
In 2023, we will be actively managing water withdrawals and discharges to optimize water usage. In addition to measuring our water usage, we will actively manage water withdrawals and discharges to optimize water usage . The most recently available information from the World Resources Institute (WRI) reveals that Warrior is not operating any mines within or near regions identified with high or extremely high-water stress.

reduction of water usage by 2030
Wastewater/Recycling
Our operations are designed to recycle and reuse water from on-site sources during coal preparation and road-dust suppression. We use water for processing stored coal in locations such as non-tailings impoundment structures or various clarifying and settling ponds. The water is either released back into the natural environment or stored and recycled once it has been clarified through settling or other treatment methods
99%
compliance with EPA’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program for the reporting period ending in Q3 2023
Biodiversity Impact
To be the best stewards of the delicate and diverse natural ecosystem located on our properties and within the surrounding areas, we strictly adhere to state and federal standards enforced by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), Alabama Surface Mining Commission (ASMC), Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), United States Army Corps of Engineers, and United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Warrior’s operations are located within the state of Alabama. With more than 6,000 wildlife species, Alabama ranks as the top state east of the Mississippi River in terms of species diversity and has the highest variety in the United States for crayfish, freshwater turtles, freshwater mussels, and freshwater snails. Our ADEM-authorized National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System discharge permits include quarterly toxicity tests that detect potential water quality issues that could impact local aquatic life.
2021
Warrior earned the “Land Stewardship Award” from the Alabama Mining Association for a wetland development project
2022
Warrior earned the “Land Stewardship Award” from the Alabama Mining Association for installation of the Phase 1 Dry Slurry System, which is the first of its kind to operate at a coal facility in the United States
2023
Warrior earned the “Water Quality Stewardship Award” for the use of advanced systems to maximize the capture of ultra fine coal, which minimizes the amount of waste materials
